Why It's Really Important For Your Photographer & Web Designer To Communicate With Each Other!

Did you know that many clients come to us because they are re-doing their website and thus, need new branding and product images?

And when that happens, the first thing I always ask the client is: “Are you working with a web designer?”

If they answer “Yes,” I then ask: “Can I reach out to them and talk about any specific images you may need for the website?”

As your branding & product photographer, it’s really important that I communicate with your web designer. When there is clear communication and collaboration between the photographer and web designer, the client always wins. That is why I partner with web designers like Samantha of Be Creatively You. Reason #1: Specific image needs will be met.

If the photographer and web designer don’t communicate, then how is the photographer supposed to know what specific images you need for your home page? Or any other pages? For example, say that the web designer is planning to design your homepage with a large, horizontal cover photo and needs an image of the business owner standing in front of a pink wall. If the photographer doesn’t know this, then how can we guarantee they will capture it during your brand photo shoot?

Reason #2: Orientation and negative space in any photographs will be communicated to save you headaches.

I always ask web designers if they need any of the images to be in a horizontal or vertical format OR if they need any negative space in the image so that they can place text somewhere. The reason why I now ask this is because I didn’t in the past, and it landed me in hot water. There had been a few instances in my early days where the client came to me post-photo shoot and asked if I took one of the photos in a format that was not already in the gallery. Or the client asked if I had an image with negative space on the left hand side so that it fits appropriately on their website. These hiccups can be avoided altogether by simply having the photographer and web designer communicate with each other on this topic.

Reason #3: You can be less-hands off and be confident that your web designer and photographer have it handled!

You as the business owner are probably way too busy to get involved in the small details and nitty gritty of what photos you need. Many times, my clients are happy to know that I am going to reach out to their web designer, because it takes a lot of the stress off them so that they can focus on other things! If you are okay with being more hands-off in the process, then that’s great! Even if you want to be involved (and some people do!), I always love to offer the option of having the client sit in on the phone call when I chat with the web designer. That makes it a win-win for everyone!
