5 Tips for Choosing the Right Product Photographer for Your Brand

Looking for a product photographer for your business?

Here are 5 tips for choosing the right product photographer for your brand!

  1. Photography style.

When looking for a product photographer, always keep in mind what style you are looking for. Do you need a product photographer who has a bright and clean style, or someone who shoots in a moody style with contrasting shadows/light? These are great questions to ask yourself. You want to make sure you choose a photographer who matches your brand’s style.

  2. Logistics.

Do you prefer to hire a product photographer who is local, or someone out of state? The benefits of choosing a product photographer who is local include being able to drop off products at their studio location at your convenience and saving money that way, or having them come to you easily! However, if you cannot find a product photographer who is local that matches your brand’s style, consider one out of state. Although it can feel like a burden to mail your products to them, you will feel comforted choosing a product photographer whose work you really love!

  3. Experience.

With more experience comes more expertise (usually). Consider whether or not experience matters to you. Just be aware there are pros and cons to various experience levels. Usually a product photographer with less experience will charge less, but may create a photograph that isn’t lit or in focus as well as a product photographer who has more experience.

  4. Knowledge of artificial light.

It is important to ask your product photographer if they are familiar with artificial lighting and feel comfortable using it. Artificial lighting is a game changer for product photos, and can be necessary to achieve an image that is fully focused and has even lighting. If you do not want to ask, you can usually tell by going through their portfolio. If they are able to capture images where all of the product is in focus and is well lit, usually that is a sign that they are familiar with artificial lighting.

  5. Budget.

It is always a good idea to get an understanding of what the current market is. We suggest doing your research and figuring out what typical costs are for product photography. Every photographer will offer something different based on their experience and skillset, but there is usually an average cost for your area. Decide what your budget is once you have done your research and go from there.
