Best Places to See the Sunset in Newburyport

You all know I love sunsets - I like to call them mother nature's paintings. When I first moved to Newburyport, I was on a quest to seek out the best places to view these magical scenes. I even Googled it (and to my disappointment, couldn't find any blogs about it)! So for my fellow North-Shore sunset lovers who are obsessed as much as I am, here are a few of my top sunset places. For some, I stumbled upon them, and for others, I did a little research.

1) Waterfront Park

One evening after having dinner downtown, we decided to walk along the water back to our apartment, only to realize that the sky was putting on a magnificent show for us! On this particular night, the sky was so pink that the water held its reflection. Fortunately I had my camera on me and snapped a bunch of photos. I would warn you though - this doesn't happen every night at this spot. Make sure you monitor the cloud cover before sunset - the more of an array of clouds, the more likely the sunset will be a stunner in this area.

2) Parker River National Wildlife Refuge

Just off the Plum Island Turnpike, you'll find the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. This park is great for nature lovers. You can buy a yearly pass for only $20, which gives you full access to all of the beaches and lookout spots from dusk until dawn. I snapped this photo at one of the resting areas along the road. You're always guaranteed a sunset here due to the location of the peninsula in regards to the direction of the sun.

3) Plum Island Point

This is my absolute favorite sunset spot in the Newburyport area! In order to get there, you need to follow Northern Boulevard all the way to the end of Plum Island in the north. Parking can be found for free at the Plum Island Point parking lot after normal business hours. During this particular night, there was a perfect mix of clouds and sun to create an orange/pink sunset. Don't forget to bring your beach chairs or towels - there is a small beach here where you can sit and enjoy the evening.

4) Joppa Park

You never know what you're going to get for a sunset, and Joppa Park is an excellent location to find a beautiful sunset no matter the evening conditions. Nestled between downtown Newburyport and Plum Island, Joppa Park provides its visitors with a fantastic blanket of still water that mirrors the colors in the sky. On this particular night, the clouds gave way to a purple sunset.

And there you have it! I continue to look for new places everyday. Do you have a favorite sunset spot in Newburyport? Drop a comment below.
