How to Build a Better Personal Brand on Social Media

Social media is so hot right now! If you own a business and you’re not on it - you need to be!

Okay, so you’re on social media, but you feel like you’re not consistent with it, and you’re kind of just posting about random things. Basically, you’re lacking flow. You want to build a better personal brand on your social media, but you feel overwhelmed and don’t even know where to start. I totally get it!

So…how do you build a better personal brand on social media?

Let me introduce to you something that will CHANGE YOUR LIFE. I learned this from the famous Jenna Kutcher and want to spread this brilliant knowledge with you because it is a GAME CHANGER in building your personal brand on social media.

Are you ready?!

Brainstorm your FIVE BRAND THEMES.

What are brand themes?

Brand themes are topics that you pertain to both you and your business. They are things that you can easily post about on rotation so that your audience understands who you are and what to expect from you. For example, my brand themes are: client spotlights, photography tips, sunsets/sunrises, my engineering background, and fun healthy drinks. Some of these topics are more relevant to who I am as a person: I love sunsets and sunrises - they are the reason I got into photography in the first place! Client spotlights and photography tips have more to do with my branding photography business. By combining themes that encompass both your business and who you are outside of your business together, you will be able to build a better personal brand on social media.

Just as a refresh, remember: a personal brand incorporates your personality, skills, and services into one facet that shows off how you are different from everyone else. It incorporates both your personality and who you are outside of your business + your business services that you offer. Here is a great resource on this that explains it further: https://influencermarketinghub.com/what-is-personal-branding/.

Back to brand themes: let me give you an example of incorporating brand themes into your social media so that you can build a better personal brand. Here is a screenshot of my IG grid for your reference:

As you can see, I have strategically posted to rotate my brand themes. Starting from the top left: a photo of me talking about my engineering background and how I got started in photography -> a photo of a client talking about a photography tip -> a photo of a client talking about a photography tip -> a client spotlight -> a photo of me talking about brand themes (woohoo!) -> a client spotlight -> a client spotlight …et cetera. Obviously, I have not stuck to a specific pattern, but I try to rotate these themes as best as I can. Healthy drinks and sunsets are some new themes that I recently decided I would like to incorporate more into my grid, which is why you don’t see them in this screenshot.

Here are a few examples of brand themes from other business owners to give you a few more ideas. Remember, it is important to keep the brand themes at a maximum of five in total. Any more than that will confuse and overwhelm your audience, and also, will not help you hone in on your brand.
